What is PhotoDynamic Therapy?
Treatment with Levulan
Photodynamic therapy was originally developed for the treatment of skin cancer, but many other skin conditions respond very well to this exciting new technology. Research has demonstrated that it has the ability to destroy the bacteria causing acne and shrink sebaceous glands as well as destroying abnormal cancerous or pre-cancerous cells. In addition, people undergoing this process also notice an improvement in the coloration, texture and pore size of their skin.
In photodynamic therapy, LevulanĀ® is applied to the skin. This is absorbed preferentially by certain structures in the skin, such as hair follicles, oil glands, bacteria, or rapidly growing cells. Because Levulan is a photosensitizer, it renders these preferred cells very vulnerable to light. We then use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) on the skin, resulting in destruction of the targeted tissue. Your treatment is usually very comfortable, with mild stinging being an occasional side effect. Following your treatment, however, there may be some redness and a sunburn-like sensation. A small amount of activated substance remains in the skin for 24 to 48 hours, so it is imperative that sunlight and even indoor light be avoided for this time. Use of sunscreen and a hat (even indoors) will help prevent discomfort. You can expect redness to subside in approximately 48 hours and for your skin to possibly flake or peel for another 48 hours. Afterwards, your skin is smoother, clearer, brighter and healthier!
